Techniques

Classic

To move in classic, you make a short kick that applies pressure to you kick zone, into the snow. Your kick zone is located on the bottom of your ski, under your boot. This is where your kick wax is applied. By doing so, you are allowing yourself to glide and to move forward. When your ski is forward, the opposite pole is planted to give you more power in your glide. This technique is called diagonal stride. Double poling is another technique used in classic as well as skate but mainly in classic. To do this, plant both poles in front of you, once you've planted them, push and bend at the knees. Come back up and repeat this until you hit a hill or need to stop. You can do this technique at the beginning of a race to get more momentum and to go faster.

Skate

Skate skiing is definitely the more technical style of the two. There are three main techniques in skate skiing: one-skate, two-skate and offset. Two-skate is the easiest technique and is also how you'll learn to skate ski. One-skate is the fastest technique, poling every stride. Finally, offset is used to go up hills.
